Dear Customers,

Some of you know me well but for those of you that don’t, I am the owner of cambridge contemporary art and cambridge contemporary crafts.

I still can’t quite believe that the place I work is now closed for the foreseeable future. This coming September will mark my 20th anniversary of working at cambridge contemporary art. It was my first job after studying History of Art at the University of East Anglia. I was taken on as a temporary part time Maternity Cover. Fortunately for me the position was made permanent and five years later, at the age of 26, I had the opportunity to buy the gallery (with the help of several business loans) from the previous owner Denise Collins, who now owns Castle Gallery in Inverness. It was incredibly daunting and exciting at the same time, especially at such a young age! Then in 2009, building on the success of cambridge contemporary art and the demand for handmade crafts made in the UK, I launched its sister craft shop, cambridge contemporary crafts, on Bene’t Street.

Running a business or being self-employed can be scary, sometimes lonely, and full of responsibility. At the end of the day who do you turn to when you are supposed to be the “boss” and you don’t know the solution to the problem? Thankfully, in 2010, I was joined by Manager, Rhiannon Coke-Woods, and then in 2017 photographer, Zuza Grubecka, joined the managerial team. Without these remarkable, hard-working, dedicated, talented women the businesses would not be where they are today. I am eternally grateful for all their help and friendship, never more so than in these incredibly difficult times.

I have so many great memories of working at cambridge contemporary art on beautiful Trinity Street, in the historic centre of Cambridge. Many films and TV series have been filmed around us. My personal highlight was when the gallery was transformed into a general grocery store as part of the filming of the Christmas special of Grantchester, fake snow and all. I was starstruck by James Norton and just about summoned the courage to ask him for a photo. You can’t tell in the photo that I am pregnant and suffering from terrible morning sickness.

Other highlights have included seeing professor Stephen Hawking, professor Brian Cox, the Tour de France whizzing past just metres in front of the window (the most incredible atmosphere in town!), and the recent school strikes with hundreds of schoolchildren going past us. Despite not being at all interested in royalty I have to admit I was swept up in royal fever when the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visited the city in 2012, passing by just metres from the gallery. We’ve held many fun events in the gallery and the most memorable will probably be meeting Sir Peter Blake, the grandfather of Pop Art and creator of the Beatles iconic album cover Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club.

I know I am incredibly lucky to have worked in such a fascinating, multi-cultural city with so many people who are passionate about the arts. My colleagues, the artists we represent, our customers, make it a truly special place to work. The gallery team is working hard to make sure that we survive by updating our website and online shop as fast as possible. Many small businesses face a very uncertain future now. Even when this lockdown ends and the worst of the crisis has passed, many of us are unsure of what we will face and whether we will be able to survive on the high street. This is why we have set up a crowdfunder:

Thank you so much if you have already donated, it means so much and we have been touched by people’s generosity.

Like so many other people in the world right now I find myself trying to adapt to my “new normal”. Working at home, trying to maintain my 2 small businesses whilst trying to home school a 6 year old and keep a 3 year old entertained. Needless to say it’s a bit of a juggling act!

I am incredibly grateful to everybody working hard in the NHS, everybody in key jobs making sure food and other essential supplies are getting through and all the other essential services we take for granted on a daily basis. There are silver linings out there, communities, neighbourhoods coming together to help one another, especially the most vulnerable. The world has changed dramatically at an unprecedented speed and these acts of kindness will hopefully live on long after the crisis is over.

Stay safe.

Nathalie Staples

P.S

Eleanor - thank you for all your hard work on the online shop! Your work ethic and efficiency is remarkable. I am so pleased to have you on our team.

This is how you can support us.

Hello all!

Since we closed last Sunday, we've received so many emails and messages on social media from customers asking 'how can we help?'. While we are very aware that in these strange times investing in a painting may not be on everyone's priority list, spending £2.50 on a greetings card, which you can redeem when we re-open, maybe just the ticket!

We have created a GoFundMe page here. It came to this as due to the size of our premisses, we won't be eligible for a large portion of the government help. There is a long and bumpy ride ahead of us, anything you can do to help us prepare is gratefully received.

We are still processing online orders from our newly established web shop. Please have a look, we are listing new work every day!

Wishing you all the best and thank you for your support,

CCA and CCC Team

We would like to ensure you that we are being as thoughtful as we can regarding the recent outbreak of Covid-19.

To protect our staff and customers as of end of today (Sunday 22nd March) we are temporarily closing cambridge contemporary art and cambridge contemporary crafts

Thank you for the outpouring of support and kind wishes for our staff and artists after our recent newsletter. We really appreciate your support and we hope to see you online - our web shop will be updated regularly.

Please take care and look after yourselves and your family.

Best wishes,

Nathalie Staples and The Gallery Team

Thank you.

Thank you for the outpouring of support and kind wishes for our staff and artists after yesterday's post. We are hoping that the government and our landlords will implement rent relief and postpone business rates. The gallery has been a prominent fixture on Cambridge high street for almost 25 years.

We will do everything we can to survive at least another 25.

We are working hard to make sure we have more work listed online. Please watch this space.

Message from the Gallery Owner

cambridge contemporary artComment

Dear Customers,

During this difficult time, the safety of our customers and our staff members is our highest priority. As the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak evolves, we are taking all necessary precautions to ensure this.

We won’t lie, as a small independent business we are extremely worried about the upcoming months. We rely heavily on customers physically visiting the gallery and seeing the artwork before purchasing it. Without you all, we cannot exist and provide good service for all the artists we represent.

In the upcoming days a big portion of the gallery’s artwork will become available online, including paintings, original prints and ceramics.

You can also support us by buying our gift cards and choosing your artwork in the gallery later.

We are still open as usual until further notice:

cambridge contemporary art Monday-Saturday 9am-5.30pm,

cambridge contemporary crafts Monday-Saturday 10am-5.30pm

both galleries are open 11am-5pm on Sundays.

You can already purchase ceramics, jewellery and gifts and vouchers on our online shop here

We remain hopeful that the situation improves quickly and send our love to all those affected.

Sincerely,
Nathalie Staples and the Gallery Team

Cheese tasting 2019

cambridge contemporary artComment

We were so pleased to see such great turnout for our cheese tasting event in December. As last year, our friends from Meadows did not disappoint with their fantastic selection of exquisite cheeses for us to try.

In the gallery, we deal with artists from all over the U.K. At Meadows, Suzannah and Emese work with food producers from all over the country. They rely on the quality of produce from their suppliers just as much we do on the skill and craft of our makers.  We see so many overlaps in the way we work and the way we think.

We are very proud that we can work with open minded and considerate businesses like them. Here is Meadows’ in their own words.

We love our indie suppliers; they make us what we are and our menu what it is. So, know for sure that when you grab lunch from us, you not only support us in doing our best but our suppliers as well. A large percentage of our ingredients are certified organic and where our smaller producers are not certified, we know they use organic ingredients or practice organic and sustainable principles in their farming & production. This is anxiety-free eating. No meat & no industrialised dairy, no danger to bees, no stress to soil, no modern slavery or other hideous working conditions for fellow human beings. Just good vibes people, seriously good vibes and all in a simple and affordable lunch plate.

We are currently looking for ad-hoc Gallery Assistant.

gallery20.jpg

Salary: £9.30 per hour

Closing date for application forms: 5th February

Interview Dates: mornings of 12th, 13th and 14th February

Start date: 5th March

When hiring a new member of staff, we look for a friendly, approachable person who will be able to give guidance to a customer looking for a particular work of art, discuss how it has been made and be able to gauge what the customer is looking for. You will need to be comfortable talking to customers about their preferences, advising them of what may be a good piece to buy and have the confidence to recommend alternatives when they aren’t sure about your choice.

You will be responsible in ensuring that you deliver excellent customer service in the gallery, on the phone and over email, alongside taking payments, wrapping purchases, and constantly monitoring and tidying the displays.

To keep the business running smoothly you will help to close the till at the end of the day, maintain accurate sales sheets as well as creating price labels, cleaning, dusting, painting walls and plinths to keep the gallery looking smart. Once you are trained, you will be confident in using excel and a POS till.

The displays in the gallery and craft shop change regularly, showing artists from all stages in their career. You may be part of the team that hangs the new exhibition and meets the artist(s) delivering their work.

We pride ourselves in promoting our artists extensively through our website and social media pages, this requires very good attention to detail to ensure that artists get the best possible exposure.

As both premises are open to the public 7 days a week, you will need to be vigilant and security minded at all times.

You must be flexible with working hours, we plan the rotas one month in advance but occasionally offer hours at short notice to cover staff sickness and other eventualities which may arise in both our premises, Cambridge Contemporary Art (Trinity Street) and Cambridge Contemporary Crafts (Bene’t Street).

We are a small team of staff and are looking for the right person to join our team. This person will be conscientious, enthusiastic, able to work in a team and also by themselves.

The regular working hours are Thursdays 1.30-5.30pm (10-6.30 at busy times of year), going up to 3 days a week to cover for staff holidays, sickness cover etc..

This position would ideally suit someone who is self-employed or freelance.

Please email us at admin@cambridgegallery.co.uk for an application form.

Exhibition of Prints by Angie Lewin, Jane Walker, ceramics by Katharina Klug and willow sculptures by Lizzie Farey

cambridge contemporary artComment

The work of Angie Lewin, Lizzie Farey and Jane Walker and Katharina Klug complement each other so well.

Make sure you visit the gallery before the end of the show (27th October). We are already down to the last editions of Angie Lewin's prints!

Jane Walker uses the reduction linocut technique to produce handmade limited edition prints. Her prints reveal a fascination with still life and the richness of her palette and her strong graphic sensibility reflect her love of 20th century artists and craftsmen, 50s textile design and Scandinavian ceramics.

Each piece by Katharina Klug is individually made from porcelain on the potter's wheel. Naive, spontaneous pencil strokes and graphic simple patterns create movement and direction.

Lizzie Farey’s intricate structures capture a still moment, a distillation and order. Intimate forms provide a hint of the process of creation. We can see and even feel points of tension in the work. Our eye can follow the artist’s hand, the choices made in twisting and turning this flexible medium.

Angie Lewin and Katharina Klug visited the gallery to celebrate the opening of the show. Thank you to everyone who registered on our website and attended the Private View!

Cambridge to Coast Private View

Friday 10th May marked the opening of our new show Cambridge to Coast. The exhibition features original prints and paintings by Jo Tunmer are ceramics by Jaejun Lee, Jane Cairns, Anne Barrell and Sarah Went.

Jo Tunmer’s work reflects the landscape from Cambridge city out towards the East Anglian coast. Jo grew up in London and thrives on the anonymity and comparative privacy that living in a city offers. In response to her urban surroundings she creates hand-pulled solarplate etchings of views of the city that often focus on a solitary figure. In comparison, her oil paintings express a romantic, utopian notion of the land.

Since 2013 Jo has focused on printmaking. In 2018, alongside running her art practice, she completed a Master’s Degree with distinction in Fine Art Printmaking from Anglia Ruskin University. This period of study enabled Jo to experiment further with wood cut printmaking techniques and fine art installation.

Jo’s work always attracts crowds, the preview night was no different. Thank you to all who registered their attendance through Facebook and our website.

Cambridge to Coast continues until 2nd June.

Spring

at cambridge contemporary art

6 April - 5 May 2019

We are very excited to begin Spring with a vibrant new exhibition lead by printmaker Charlotte Cornish. Visit the gallery to see new work by our talented painters, printmakers, ceramicists and glassmakers. We hope to energise you in the new season!

Please join us for a Meet & Greet in the gallery with our featured artists

on 27th April between 2.30pm and 4.30 pm.

This is a free event, we kindly ask you to register here

Charlotte Cornish's inspiration from places she has travelled to – most recently Marrakesh - are initial starting points for her compositions. Her artworks, however, are not direct representations of those places, but a mixture of elements from the seen world, and her emotional responses and experiences. Charlotte continues to be fascinated with the unending possibilities of working with colour.

Cambridge Original Printmakers Biennale last autumn was a very successful exhibition showcasing the best printmakers from Cambridgeshire.

We were kindly asked to choose The Best Print in Show and Conni Johnson along with Terry Bryan were the winners of the cambridge contemporary art prize. We are very pleased to show Conni's work during our Spring Exhibition.

Sue Jones is an Artist, Printmaker, Tutor, Consultant, and founding organiser of the Cambridge Original Printmakers Biennale. Sue's abstract prints are inspired by landscape and are infused with a sense of mystery, vitality, colour and space. The Monotypes, are unique, evolved over time, constructed of many layers.

Tracey Ashman has been printmaking for a decade and has a passion for the process, which she finds can be very exacting and challenging. Tracey finds that printmaking offers limitless creativity, in techniques that can be combined. Her preferred printmaking processes are mono-prints, silkscreen and linocuts.

cambridge contemporary art has been representing ceramic work by Jane Hollidge for over 20 years. We are very happy to announce that we will also be showing Jane's new paintings during our Spring Show.

The greatest impact on Jane's work was living in Asia. The wonderful simplicity and discipline of the art and culture there is seen in the way even the most humble objects are arranged.

We are really excited to exhibit new work by painter Emily Powell, sculptor Scott Irvine, ceramicists Ann-Marie MagsonSilvia KLara ScobiePeter ArscottSarah HillmanAlison GrahamAnn Lee, Laura De Benedetti and glass by Ruth Shelley.

If you would like to be the first to receive information about one of the artists in one of the exhibitions below, contact us and we’ll be in touch when the new work arrives.

Early Spring in the Gallery

Early Spring

at cambridge contemporary art

2 - 31 March 2019

Welcome to our Early Spring Show featuring several brand new artists to the gallery.

Rachel Arif is a landscape painter based in London, who spends much of her spare time along the Suffolk Coast, where she is inspired by its enchanting coastlines, picturesque rural villages and woodland areas. Her work is semi-abstract, capturing the intense force of the weather as it shapes our lives and natural landscape.

Since graduating, Honor Surie has practised in graphics, ceramics, sculpture and painting. She moved to the Suffolk area in the late 70’s and the coastal landscape became her main inspiration. Her paintings capture the landscape’s mysterious meditative quality, the eerie pale light spilling from seas, rivers and skies.

Sara Johnson trained at Winchester School of Art and Loughborough College of Art & Design where she specialised in woven textiles. Her interest in textural effects combined with atmosphere is portrayed in her watercolour and more recently, acrylic paintings. Sara's work in our show focuses on Cambridgeshire fens.

Penny Frith draws inspiration from her travels to the scenic coastlines and landscapes of the UK and France. She strives to convey a sense of tranquillity along with a luminous light filled quality through use of colour and proportion.

cambprintbiennale2.jpg

Last year cambridge contemporary art was honoured to be asked to choose the Best Print in Show at the Cambridge Original Printmakers Biennale 2018. Terry Bryan's 'Autumn Grassland' was selected and we are very happy to be showing the winning print and a selection of other works by the artist during our Early Spring show.

Terry Bryan, a printmaker and graphic artist, works from his print workshop in rural Essex. For over four decades he worked in the world of graphic design, achieving success both nationally and internationally for himself and his clients alike.

Chrissy Norman works in a traditional way using soft or hard ground on copper or zinc with aquatint, etched in acid. Much of her work is printed using coloured inks blended on one etching plate, carefully wiped and then passed through an etching press. Chrissy is inspired by the East Anglian coastline and the effect of light and season on the landscape.

If you would like to be the first to receive information about one of the artists in one of the exhibitions below, contact us and we’ll be in touch when the new work arrives.

Local ceramicist Amanda Banham is our featured artist at the crafts gallery this month. If you haven't yet seen how she has transformed our window display with retro toys - don't wait, her work has been flying off the shelves! If you're not local to Cambridge, we have added all of Amanda's pieces to our online shop. You can be a proud owner of one of her ceramic houses or a rainbows in just a couple of clicks! 2019 Winter Show

Mixed Winter Show

at cambridge contemporary art

12 January - 24 February 2019

We are so excited to have paintings by Anita Klein in the gallery. As always Anita's work focuses on those everyday moments we take for granted. Beautiful, life affirming paintings guaranteed to beat those January Blues!

We have two brand new artists to the gallery this month: Matt Horne and Jenni Cator.

We also have beautiful papercuts by Darin Mountand new work by Jacky Hawthorne and Lucy Howard.

Jacky Hawthorne’s paintings of still life, often with stylised flowers, are informed by her training in ceramics and her previous career as garden designer. Jacky uses acrylic on paper and her paintings are quirky, light-hearted and colourful. As with garden design there is a strong emphasis on balance and composition.

Born in Norwich, Jenni Cator trained in the North West, worked in London and now lives and paints in the Norfolk countryside. Jenni paints in oil on board, draws with pastel on paper and prints with lino.

Matt Horne trained at Aylesford Pottery in Kent, developing his technical skills in production throwing before setting up his own workshop at Capel-le-Ferne, near Folkestone, in 2008.

Matt enjoys pushing the boundaries of form with contemporary, elegant and sometimes challenging shapes, which are complemented by the stunning colour combinations in his glazes.

All of his work is hand thrown in porcelain on the potter’s wheel and finished with crystalline glaze. Crystalline is a complex glazing process in which Zinc Silicate crystals form in the glaze during the firing, making every piece completely unique.

Mixed Winter Show

3 - 24 December 2018

It's that time of year again when both galleries are full of beautiful works of art, handmade Christmas decorations and cards. For your convenience both galleries will be open until 6pm Mon-Sat in December.

Please join us for a spot of shopping and Christmas cheer on Wednesday 12th December, 6-8 pm.  Local cheesemonger Hum-Closen will be here with a selection of delicious hand made cheese to enjoy (with a glass of wine) while you browse the unique selection of artworks on display. We will also be giving away free tote bags with our exclusive designs on them.

Every year during our mixed winter show we like to introduce new artists to the gallery. Ceramicists Hilary Mayo and Adam Frew will be familiar names to followers of British Studio Ceramics. We are very pleased to have the opportunity to show their wonderful work in Cambridge.

After a sold out summer show, we are extremely excited to show new paintings by Lesley Seeger. Inspired by the natural world she works en plein air and completes work in the studio. Working on up to seven paintings at a time, each body of work includes both landscapes and semi abstract florals whose styles and methods  inform and compliment each other. She is to be found, most of the time in the middle of a field with a wheelbarrow full of paints and canvases!

We’ve had a wonderful time during our demo with ceramicist Margaret Gardiner yesterday! The artist showed us how she throws and decorates her jugs and vases. Thank you all for coming! The next event in the gallery is on 27th October - Gael Sellwood will be in the gallery between 11-4pm to talk about her work and sign her new book ‘The measure of the Year’. Don’t miss it!
