Elizabeth Gorringe

Elizabeth Gorringe is a self-taught potter from Oxfordshire in the UK.

Her work is a distillation of ideas, elements and thoughts to create quiet, uncluttered pots; a visual search for simplicity, that results in pots that are minimal, basic and restrained. She aims to design and make with directness and balance, to create work that has purity and purpose. The use of charcoal matt black glazes create a rich darkness that are an important element, atmosphere and feeling within her work.

Her functional pots stem from her interest in making objects that can be connected with daily. Objects that can be held, used and can become deeply familiar to us through their daily use and have the potential to bring comfort and enrichment to the simple everyday rituals of eating and drinking.

In contrast to her functional pots her practice also involves making stand-alone pieces that are for quiet reflective display. This side of her work allows for a freer, more expressive and spontaneous side to making.

An important aspect to all her making is for her pots to retain the vitality of the making process within the finished piece and although working with porcelain requires a strictness of practice she always wants her work to hold a sense of lyricism, movement and life.
