Katy Ellis
Graduating from Glasgow School of Art in 1995, Katy was awarded the ‘John Kinross Scholarship’ from the Royal Scottish Academy to paint and study in Italy, followed by the ‘June Stoke Roberts Bursery’ from an open exhibition at the Bankside Gallery in London.
With these bursaries, she set off on two trips of travel and painting on consecutive years from the south to the north of Italy. She painted in situ, exploring the landscapes and towns, immersing herself in her surroundings.
Inspired by these trips, she went on to travel through India, Thailand and Laos on a year long trip. This underlined and confirmed her love of painting the landscape and being out in it.
On her return to England she moved from London to Saffron Walden where she began to explore the riverways and towns of the countryside through Cambridgeshire and Essex. After a memorable visit to the ‘Winter Lights’ at Anglesea Abbey Gardens, Katy was inspired by how the lights accentuated the forms and patterns of the Silver Birch branches, these studies led to her working on a tree series.
She continues to explore while out walking her dog in nearby forests, fields and waterways, gathering images and inspiration for further work.
