Susan Abbs

Susan Abbs is a mixed media artist who works with both traditional media and iPad. Originally from Singapore, she has lived in the UK for nearly 30 years. In 2012, she became the first local artist-in-residence at Orleans House Gallery in Twickenham.

She is currently working on a new series of work: Light on the Horizon. The world is a scary place - world pandemic, wars raging, resources dwindling, climate deteriorating - but in the midst of the darkness, there is always light. Unlike her usual colourful artworks, this new series is very dark and monochromatic. In 2019, at the cusp of the pandemic, she was diagnosed with stage 3 cancer. The experience was harrowing but no matter how bad and how dark, there was always light  - her very supportive family and friends, close proximity to an amazing hospital, etc. Her cancer is now in remission and the world is bright and wonderful again. This series is very dark, it isn’t really about the darkness but the shining light. We can’t see the brightness of light without the contrast of darkness.

A keen urban sketcher, Susan can be seen drawing on location with her iPad. She teaches art in her studio in Cambridge, as well as life drawing at Hills Road College. She has exhibited in various exhibitions and galleries, and her work can be found in the Cambridge Art Book.
